Surbia Night
12.08.2008
Hi Folks, Greetings from Surbia
This coming Saturday 16th August, you are cordially invited to our inaugral Surbia Night at Manchester's world-famous Night & Day Cafe.
On the bill we have:
The Spectres:
From the Wirral, we are pleased to present retro-influenced indie-soul sensations The Spectres. Still fairly new to the Merseyside music scene, they are already building a fervant following.
Featuring Cheryl Doyle – vocals, Christopher Pickering – guitar, Liam Power – guitar, Nick Pickering – drums and Steven Campbell – bass.
Influences include: The Velvet Undergound, David Axelrod, The Teddy Bears, The Hives, Neil Young, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, The Coral, The Four Tops, Queens of the Stone Age, Marianne Faithfull, Nirvana, Portishead, Phil Hausner, Can, Sonic Youth, The Shangri-Las, Betty Everett, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, The Beach Boys, Twin Peaks, Stereolab and Blondie.
Hayley Faye:
After many years locked in a dark cellar Hayley Faye dusted off her red shoes, ventured outside and embarked on a little mission. The first person she found was a Public Pervert who directed Hayley Faye to the Empire of magical people. When Hayley arrived at her destination she discovered a little magic girl called Babysleepmode who had a friend called Andy the Bass man. Andy told Hayley that he had read The News and saw a picture of a little man called Dan (Dannyboy to be precise) and immediately the picture was complete and they all lived happily together in a Scooby Doo van.
Thankfully, Hayley, Andy and Dan are stopping their Scooby Doo van for a pit-stop at our Surbia Night!!
Always a pleasure to catch this great live band
"Hayley Faye to those in the know has been a presence on the local music scene since her mid-teens, her shakey, enchanting melodies are now dirtied up and swing
with an excitement that’s now informed by modern indie, whilst still being indebted by the very best parts of the female singer/songwriter genre.
This live demo shuffles and bounces along and if you’re looking for a near neighbour look in the direction of Ida Maria who trades in similar edgy rock fashions.
Where Faye has the leverage is in the range and quality of her self penned songs which make her a very signable proposition".

Elgazelle:
Elgazelle are a band passionate about music and partying, and not much else. Influences consist of 60's garage, soul and mod. Great to have these local Manc boys playing Surbia Night.
Band members include long term friends Paul Wright (Vocals), Rick Hyde (Guitar) and Phil Lodge (Bass) who have been in bands together for many years. After moderate success with their previous bands they eventually met up with good mates Lee Morse (Guitar) and John Gagon (Drums), who share their fondness for no nonsense rocknroll & good times to finalise the line up as Elgazelle in 2007.
The band have played relentlessly around their hometown of Manchester, bringing their party vibe & soulful performances to venues accross the city including The Aftershow at Mo Ho Live and a sell out gig at Red @ Retro Bar.
As of May 2008 the band have started recording sessions for a forthcoming EP at Blueprint Studios in Salford.
Birds Vs Planes (formerly Stars of Track & Field)
All the way from Carlisle, we are proud to welcome Birds vs Planes. A 5 piece post-punk, alt-pop outfit featuring Jenny (Vocals, Keys), Adam (Drums), Andy (Guitars), Blake (Bass) and Chris (Guitars).
Their sound incorporates elements of ska, indie and prog and coupled with Jenny's irresistibly catchy melodies has produced a set of hook laden pop songs.
The band's first release, 2006's "Not Here To Shop" attracted MTV and Roxy Outdoor to use in their summer soundtracks. This paved the way for two further releases and over 100 shows in the last 18 months all over the UK club and festival circuit with the likes of We Are Scientists, Ida Maria, Mystery Jets, Late of the Pier, The Sounds, The Departure, The Undertones and Dead Disco amongst many others.
Following recent exposure on MTV's "Get Seen Get Heard" competition, where the band made the Final 5, BvP are currently enjoying performances at a number of UK music festivals this summer alongside Super Furry Animals, Dizzee Rascal, KT Tunstalll and Supergrass.
If you're up for pop, indie, punk, ska and a sexy girls voice then BvP are the band for you.
and finally...............
Pierre Hall (of The Lead Balloons)
Late surprise guest for you all to enjoy. We are very pleased to announce that Pierre has agreed to open the bill with an acoustic set.
Half Mauritian 25-year old Manchester-based singer songwriter/poet/man-about-town Pierre Hall was orginally born in Enfield, London. Raised on the sunny-side of the Wirral, and despite being fed a strict diet of Michael Jackson ('i didn't know any other music existed!') and the girl groups of the 60s and 70s, forged his indie roots at around aged 17 and started putting guitar music to the poetry he had been writing for so long. Having played a major role in the fast-becoming legendary party/gig venue that was Oak Rd in Manchester, he now spends most time promoting/talking about two nights: akoustik Anarkhy (www.akoustikanarkhy.co.uk) and 'Friends of Mine' (www.myspace.com/friendsofminelive) and performing with his janglier-than-jangly outfit 'The Lead Balloons'...
'Singer Pierre Hall was born just days after NME released its legendary C86 tape, and more than almost anyone the band seem to carry its spirit in their blood - friendly and joyously lo-fi, unashamed to jangle through bittersweet little sing-songs but equally likely to rock out in a thoroughly enjoyable way - by the last couple of tunes their pop's gone all Buzzcocks but is no less sparkling.' -manchester music
"Pierre Hall, Manchester's most ubiquitous scenester and street pop poet finally gets a band together, and - who'd have thought it! - writes the drunken, pie-eyed skiffle pop anthems that The Libertines' second album should have sounded like. Exuberent pop heaven.." -MANCHESTER TIME OUT
'This boy has rare talent'-City Life*Demo of the Week
'A sweet boy, with a heart full of tunes' -Manchester Music
So there you have it, come and join us this Saturday and enjoy a great night of love and music!!
oh and spare a thought for The King (Elvis Presley R.I.P 16/8/1977) 31 years!!
That's all for now Folks

| Air Cav, Plenty and Hayley Faye |
Hi Folks
Hope you're good, little update for your perusal....
Plenty
The second Plenty release "Spinning" was released on Monday 30th June. Available on limited 300 7" vinyl and 100 only "vinyl replica" CD
single. Another classic piece of "impassioned vocals, jangling indie guitars and thumping drums". Heavy interest again from Japan and Europe as well as locally in Manchester. Their songs are just too good to lie dusty on the shelf, the story continues.....
Hayley Faye
We at Surbia are very pleased to announce that Hayley officially signed a recording/publishing contract with us recently. Obviously we are extremely happy to have her on board, along with her band, Andy (Bass) and Dan (Drums). What a threesome they make!! They recently completed live demo tracks at Airtight Studios in Manchester under the watchful eye of Tom Knott. The results of which have been garnering excellent reviews:

The Mag (Pennie V) 9/10 Exceptional
The first track my itunes decided to play (who knows why) was actually the last, 'Art Teacher' and wow, what an introduction to Hayley Faye that was. It's fun and possibly my favourite of the three. I must admit to being a fan of the female acoustic singer/songwriter genre so she had me on her side from the word go but ignoring such a small bias the three tracks on the live demo wrack up points all the way.The opening track 'Babysleepmode' is bouncy and energetic and draws you in from the start. It is perfect for singing along to and even dancing around your front room when you're alone. The middle track, 'Song For The Deaf' is a change in tone somewhat. The lyrics are massively cute! The music comes in waves, alternating between being soft and hard keeping the listening hooked throughout.
Also on Wednesday June 11th, Hayley's track "babysleepmode" from the live demo cd was played on The Steve Lamacq show on BBC Radio 2. Mr Lamacq was very complimentary, proudly declaring you heard it on his show first. He also commented/predicted that Hayley will one day be walking the red carpet at the Brit Awards!!....praise indeed
Also last Friday, 27th June, Hayley, Andy and Dan headlined at the Night and Day Cafe in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Great set, went down a storm with the very appreciative audience.

Here's the official press stuff...
"They're exciting, raw and sound new to the ear. Their songs have intrigue as well as appeal and the combination of all this makes them one to watch in 2008." - The Mag
The buzz is growing. February 2008 saw the release of the debut single from Air Cav and the press reviews said it all. "As promising a debut as you'll hear all winter" said DrownedInSound. "Air Cav's songs glide between rock and nuclear powered folk all too easily; this is the sound of a band who are pretty much unstoppable" said manchestermusic.co.uk. Steve Lamacq, a fan since he heard the demos a year earlier, enthusiastically played the single on his In New Music We Trust show on the day of release. And the packed launch party, held at Manchester's legendary Roadhouse venue, garnered five star reviews, with Audioscribbler noting that "where they really excel is in providing what seems initially like a wall of sound, before allowing themselves to carefully pick out and remove bricks from within the wall; this gives them a range as poised and beautiful as it is powerful and full on."
What else is there to tell? Well, the story of Air Cav begins in the jungles of Vietnam where Allan receives a phone call from school friend Chris back home in Manchester. Let's start a band. Sharing a passion for all things aurally uplifting; from sixties garage to French sitar music, this was going to be an interesting prospect. Mark liked what he heard and duly threw his melodic, driving bass playing into the mix, as did folk violinist Sophie who completed the band's line-up in summer 2006. Since then, the four have been inseparable, spending long, rainy, Mancunian evenings writing songs, dreaming and performing the music they love to people as much as they can….
Now Surbia Records are proud to present the second single from this exciting band. Released on 7th July 2008, the double A-side "Embers" / "Picking at The Bones" is available on seven inch vinyl (limited edition of 500 copies), ten inch one-sided etched vinyl (limited edition of 300 copies) and "vinyl replica" CD. Both established favourites in the Air Cav live set, these recordings have been produced by Tom Knott (The Earlies) at Manchester's renowned Airtight Studios to capture their powerful anthemic quality. Imagine a festival stage on a summer evening or a tightly packed venue, close your eyes, stick the volume up as high as it will go and turn on to Manchester's next great breakthrough band.'

New Signing - Air Cav
20.12.2007
Early Crimbo pressie for us and all of you out there in Surbia Land.
Here at Surbia, we are very pleased and privileged to announce our latest signing to the label, Air Cav.
The story of Air Cav begins in the jungles of Vietnam. Allan receives a phone call from school friend Chris back home in Manchester. Let’s start a band. Sharing a passion for all things aurally uplifting; from sixties garage to French sitar music, this was going to be an interesting prospect. Mark liked what he heard and duly threw his melodic, driving bass playing into the mix, as did folk violinist Sophie who completed the band’s line-up in summer 2006. Since then, the four have been inseparable, spending long, rainy, Mancunian evenings writing songs, dreaming and performing the music they love to people as much as they can.
Triumphant supports for the likes of We Are Scientists, The Young Knives and Architecture in Helsinki followed. Steve Lamacq heard an early version of "Alliance" and declared it one of the "Five Hottest Records in the World Right Now". BBC Manchester got excited about "grandious indie soundscapes that will fill you with joy." By the time Manchester’s annual In The City event came around, the tiny basement where Air Cav were booked to headline was nowhere near enough to contain this colossal sound – people clinging to the walls, flinging their arms round each other down the front, heads cramming through the spaces on the rammed staircase. Three weeks later they took on Paris, headlining at the city’s coolest baroque indie hangout La Fleche D’Or in front of a packed crowd of young Parisians shouting along to every word.
We are due to release the band's debut single "Alliance" coupled with "Branches" in early February 2008. Pre-orders for the limited 500 only 7" vinyl single (SUB8) and limited 500 only "vinyl replica" cd single (SUB7) with stunning artwork by Liam Palmer will be up soon in our website shop. Demand will be high for this release, make sure you reserve your copy.

Alright Folks
Plenty
Thanks to all of you that have been buying our latest release. Sales are going very well, especially Japan!! For those of you that are in the collectors club and have not taken up the option of your allocated number (i.e same number that you got for Granby Row 7") then now is the time to buy. Plenty's next release "Spinning" is scheduled for Feb 2008, again in a special sleeve with Hacienda momento.
Granby Row
Our scheduled release for Granby Row (SUB 5 and SUB 6) will now not happen as planned. The tracks are recorded and are in the vaults but the release has been postponed, indefinately. The boys are not sure of their future plans at the moment, indeed if they are to even remain together. Good luck to Sean, Tom and Dan in whatever they decide. A real shame as the newly recorded tracks sounded stunning. Ah well.............
Hayley Faye
For those of you that are wondering about Hayley. She has been busy writing and getting a band together (proving more difficult than it sounds or should be). Hopefully she will be in the studio in 2008 and we should finally see the fruits of her labours. Don't worry, it will be well worth the wait.
Surprise
Fantastic news here at Surbia. We are nearly ready to announce our latest signing. Just need to dot the i's and cross the t's. We are really excited about this 4 piece band. Their debut single is pencilled in for end of January. The Surbia boat will be well and truly pushed out for this one.

The 'AA' side 'Regret', driven by a killer bassline, is one great big hook to get jealous of, the vocals are distorted back and forth and everything is expertly executed. You can almost hear the jumping scissor kick in this friendlier neighborhood maximo park.
Both tracks are super strong by this fledgling band who sound like they are trying their hardest to force you to have a good time.
